This post is a bit late, since I didn’t want to preempt the parents’ newborn announcements, but this little sweetheart was worth waiting for.

With any newborn session, you never know what in what kind of state you’ll find the baby, the parents, the house, etc. because those first few days are such a whirlwind of sleeplessness, adjustment, and chaos. Also, there was the added uncertainty of what kind of state I would be in, since I had just gotten my second COVID-19 shot the day prior, and I was hearing all sorts of cautionary tales of how the second shot had sent my healthcare warrior peers whimpering to bed.

In this case, we were blessed in multiple ways. My post-vaccination symptoms were mild, and the little girl was as calm as any baby I’ve ever met, despite being bundled up in all manner of lace and fabric roses. The parents were awake, well-groomed, and showed no outward sign of crankiness. Their toddler son was curious about his little sister and even more curious about the camera person. And their house was far less of a disaster than mine (admittedly, this gives you a generous margin of acceptability). I was concerned we wouldn’t have enough natural light inside on a February morning, so I packed both flashes and continuous LED lights, but it was sunny enough that my big bag stayed zipped shut.

The baby’s last outfit is special, since it was worn by the baby’s mother and all of her sisters. The vintage ’80s Guess overall (in adult size) is still listed on the Guess website, but is listed as out of stock. These particular baby overalls are in great shape, but they aren’t for sale, as they are destined to be worn by many future babies in the family.

Whether we dressed her in lace or stonewashed denim, this darling baby stayed calm, but alert. I was so amazed. It’s probably too much to hope for that she will always be this easy-tempered, but I was so grateful to have been able to photograph her and her family during this precious time!
