The other color guard girls call her “Flag Diva.” This is simultaneously apt and grossly misapplied, depending on the use of “diva.” In its historic usage, diva referred to a talented star, and this fits perfectly. Emma has worked hard to earn this. If diva implies an entitled, high-maintenance, drama queen, then nothing could be further from Emma’s sensible and kind personality.
Emma loves her family, and would be just as happy cheering on her sister getting her picture taken as getting her own taken. But when the lights are pointed in her direction, she can perform beautifully, especially once she gets a flag in her hands. I couldn’t show the full height of her flag tosses because they were well out of the camera frame until the flag was almost ready to clobber her. This limited what she was able to do for her pictures. But when she is performing during a show, she can pull out all the stops, and she is amazing to watch.
