After five weeks of drought conditions, it was rainy on Karen and Brian’s family portrait day. Mercifully, there was only an occasional light sprinkle during the actual session, and the ground wasn’t even muddy, since the parched earth was soaking up the rain as fast as it had fallen.

This is the third time I’ve done family portraits for Karen and Brian, and their little girl has grown in the last six years. She’s still no giant and she can still ride gleefully on top of Brian’s shoulders. But she’s now heavy enough to choke him a little when she wraps her arms around his neck to ride piggyback.

Because of the light rain and the thick clouds, we didn’t get the colorful sunset we were hoping for, and it got dark more quickly than usual. So we had a limited window to take pictures, but fortunately they were seasoned veterans with working with me, and they are all very photogenic, so we still got a nice variety of photos. Also, the rain seemed to drive away the geese and rinse away the goose poop that is usually thick in many areas of the park, so we had access to a few places that I often need to sidestep.

Their daughter is starting to look more mature in her pictures, which is a little bittersweet, but rewarding to see her grow. But she is still content to be Daddy’s little girl if it means he will flick the daddy-long-legs off the stump before she goes near it.
