Andy used to play soccer with my son, but I haven’t seen him since he was around the third grade. His mom said he was shy and really didn’t want to have his picture taken. I was prepared for him to be withdrawn and possibly sulky, or maybe stiff and uncomfortable. But he was actually easy and pleasant to talk to, as well as compliant and patient with all my instructions.

Because of the harsh contrast between the bright sky and the shade under the tree, I needed to pull out the flash at the very beginning of the session. The extra test flashes to get the lighting balanced can often intimidate people not used to having their picture taken, but Andy took it like a champ. Looking back, I didn’t have to discard a single picture through the entire session due to him blinking, which is really unusual, especially for someone with light-colored eyes.

The only thing that was a little challenging about him is that his face would go through five subtly different half-smiling expressions in the space of a couple of seconds, and it was difficult to keep up, because I wanted them all. It’s a shame that he doesn’t enjoy having his picture taken when he is such a natural in front of a camera. He is keeping his options open as far as career choices, but he thinks it will be in science, possibly engineering, and I’m pretty sure he crossed modeling off the list.
