It’s a good thing my seniors are brave. We’ve had rain every day for a week now, but we’ve managed two sessions in the little gaps between cloudbursts. When the sunflower blooms only look their best for about a week, you have to seize the day, even if it’s a bit damp.

This senior has a fresh, natural look and classic style.

I can see her portraits not embarrassing her in twenty years. Unlike mine. But we don’t need to discuss that here.

I brought a step stool to the field because I think freestyle posing (standing without any props to lean on) is hard to feel comfortable with when you’re just starting out. Especially when you’re staring down a big white lens flanked by two photographic lights on stands.

But her easy smiles from the start meant we could dispense with the stool pretty quickly, and we had her standing in the middle of the flowers.

And it was good that she was done with the stool, because soon I was using it to get a higher angle to surround her completely with flowers.

By this time the stool was covered with my muddy footprints, so I was glad she didn’t need it anymore.

She was doing just fine without it.

She was comfortable enough to suggest some ideas of her own. This was one of them.

Her easy-going personality made her a delight to work with, and I’m looking forward to Part II of her shoot in a couple of weeks!
